Each of the above companies is a "supply chain member" of an enterprise called the Carbon Disclosure Project. The Carbon Disclosure Project is an independent not-for-profit organization holding the largest database of primary corporate climate change and water information in the world.
As you may recall, the RCGA Board of Directors adopted 4 strategic initiatives in 2009. They are:(1.) Sharpening the Region’s Economic Development Products (2.) Leveraging the Region’s Location Advantages (3.) Attracting, Developing and Retaining Top Talent in the Region, and (4.)Regional Sustainability as Good Economics.
Our region's Climate Prosperity Project is an initiative to help fulfill the aforementioned priority by assisting companies to adopt more Sustainable business practices and improve their bottom lines, as well as to fulfill the region’s immense potential in the Green Economy. Economic analyses indicate that there is significant promise for St. Louis in the clean energy economy. In fact, one of the industry clusters of the future identified in the regional economic development plan is Sustainable Technologies --- including Plant Science & Ag Tech, Advanced Energy Solutions, and Sustainable Building Design & Materials.
In that context, the RCGA – as part of our continuing refinement of the region’s economic strategies – is about to undertake the so-called Greenprint, which is patterned after similar efforts recently completed by the fellow National Climate Prosperity Pilot communities of Denver, Colorado; Silicon Valley, California; and Portland, Oregon. (Climate Prosperity 2.0)
The Greenprint 2011 is an action plan created by business and community leaders that advances innovation, efficiency and conservation in the use and reuse of resources to increase employment, income, productivity and competitiveness in our region.
In this regard, we are taking occasions to share “best practices” and present insightful speakers, such as Paul Dickinson, on this subject. This breakfast program tomorrow is presented by the RCGA, AT&T, and the Missouri Botanical Garden.
Discover how your business or organization can improve its performance and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by registering today to attend this timely program.
Then, this Wednesday, June 29th, from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the RCGA offices, U.S. Representative John Shimkus (R-Ill.), chair of the House Subcommittee on Environment and Economy and a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, will present his perspective on energy and environment issues facing his Committee.

The Greenprint will contribute to the RCGA Board's goal of improving the St. Louis region on indicators of regional vitality, economic health and the creation of community wealth through programs and activities that do the following:

In the next few months, Working Teams will be created to address these objectives, develop metrics to measure the success of the Greenprint and establish programs and activities. St. Louis Greenprint 2011 will also contain an inventory of regional climate prosperity businesses and assets and catalog the sustainability initiatives occurring in the region.

Help Improve Soulard Farmer's Market --- St. Louis City Seeks Public Input On The Soulard Market Master Plan: The City of St. Louis has initiated a master planning study of the historic Soulard Market and Park located at 7th Street and Lafayette Avenue. Soulard Market, the oldest market west of the Mississippi, is a significant part of St. Louis’ history providing food and products to the region since the 1800s. Today, the Market hosts a variety of vendors from food to retail and is open Wednesdays through Saturdays all year.
This study is important for several reasons. The Market’s Grand Hall and infrastructure were built in 1929 and have not had a major renovation since opening. The last study of the market was completed more than 10 years ago. Since that time, only minor upgrades have been made to the market. The City would like to maintain Soulard Market as a destination for shoppers across the region, providing a variety of food and retail options for generations to come.

Shoppers at Soulard Market
The study will address parking, trash disposal, heating and cooling issues and other potential infrastructure upgrades. It will also look at ways to better use the adjacent park and the upper level of the Grand Hall.
The public’s input is needed as part of the planning process and critical to its success. The study team is seeking information on what the public likes most about the market, what they like about other markets in the area and what changes or improvements they would like to see at Soulard Market. The online survey will be available at www.soulardmarketsurvey.com until July 5th.
The results of the survey and recommendations for the Market and Park will be compiled in a Master Plan scheduled to be presented to the public in early 2012.
For questions, please contact Gary Bess, director of the City’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry at 314.289.5300.

October Pittsburgh Leadership Trip To Focus On Successes In Economic Development, Intergovernmental And Regional Cooperation, Regional Sustainability, And Others: In what has become a tradition in the St. Louis area since the inaugural Leadership Trip to Cleveland back in 1996, regional leaders are joining forces for a "best practices" examination of Pittsburgh on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, October 2nd, 3rd and 4th for the Annual RCGA Annual Leadership Trip.
|
|
|
Confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers, which form the Ohio River.
|
Led this year by Ameren Chairman, President & CEO and RCGA Chairman Tom Voss, the Leadership Exchange to Pittsburgh will provide St. Louis CEOs, elected officials, and regional civic leaders a unique and in-depth opportunity to focus on a number of issues important to our own metropolitan area, strengthen existing relationships and forge new ones.
Through these annual Leadership Exchanges, we have advanced issues over the years here in St. Louis as diverse as center city revitalization; the proactive pursuit of the St. Louis BioBelt Plant and Life Sciences strategy; the development of the CORTEX (the Center of Research, Technology and Entrepreneurial Exchange); and various St. Louis venture capital initiatives; and many “best practices” examples of bi-state economic development – to name a few.
This promises to be an outstanding Trip and we certainly hope you can join us. The Leadership Trip registration fee of $2,999 covers each delegate's participation, air fare, including single occupancy accommodations, and all meals (starting Sunday with lunch and ending Tuesday with lunch), as well as local transportation.
During the past 15 years, Pittsburgh has transformed itself from a ‘steel city’ to one that hosted the G-20 Summit in 2009 to international accolades and coverage. Among the issues that we’ll explore are:
- Agents of Change – Pittsburgh’s Transformational Journey
- Pittsburgh’s efforts to work with and combine the services of several of its 130 municipalities
- Efforts to subsidize direct flights to Paris
- How the Arts have revitalized Downtown Pittsburgh
- Pittsburgh’s Energy Economy: the Engine of Innovation driving the Transformation of the Regional Economy
- Waterfront Development
- Championing Regional Sustainability

AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust Playing Key Role In St. Louis Center City Revitalization: As recent media reports have noted, there is a mini real estate boom underway in St. Louis’ center city --- what with the Park Pacific, the Central Library, the Chase Park Plaza, and the Peabody Opera House, just to name a few. Having experienced over $4 billion in new investment in the 10 years before the “Great Recession in 2008,” the present uptick in center city investment is most welcome. What is not as widely known is that one of the major investors in St. Louis’ center city renaissance is a very unique lender, namely the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust (HIT).
|
|
|
From left: The Chase Park Plaza; The Laurel; Park Pacific Lofts; and the Continental Life Building.
|
The HIT’s 2010 investments in St. Louis include a $45 million investment in the $175 million mixed use adaptive renovation of the former Dillard’s Department Store as The Laurel and $63 million to support the $98 million renovation of the former Union Pacific classic HQ building next to the Central Library as the Park Pacific residential and retail development. In its several decade history, the HIT has invested over $430 million in 24 St. Louis projects with a total development cost of $743 million, creating more than 3,500 housing units and an estimated 5,500 union construction jobs.
Last week, I had the opportunity to have lunch with the man behind the Trust, Housing Investment Trust CEO Steve Coyle. Steve and I were colleagues when we both worked for then-HUD Secretary Patricia Roberts Harris in Washington. Following a very successful career as a national developer, Steve led the renaissance of Boston as Director of the Boston Redevelopment Authority for over a decade for then-Mayor Ray Flynn, before being recruited to be CEO of the Trust in 1992.
Coyle and his colleagues have invested literally billions in key real estate developments throughout the United States, and have been and continue to be very bullish on St. Louis. As former Citicorp CEO Walter Wriston aptly used to say, “capital goes where it is welcome, and it stays where it is well treated.” The AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust is most welcome in St. Louis, and we appreciate their confidence in our market.

Steve Coyle
How fitting it is that a major source for the continuing revitalization of St. Louis is the pension funds of the men and women who have and continue to build these new structures and renovate our City’s historic properties.
